Note: The 2020 edition of the Premier’s Cup ran at Doomben on July 27 offering $125,000 due to the COVID-19 affected Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.

Run under quality handicap conditions and only open to horses aged three years and older, the Premier’s Cup is a key lead-up race for longer distance gallopers targeting a run back at the track on Stradbroke Handicap Day in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (3200m).

The Group 2 $1.2 million The Q22 (2200m) is another next-up option for Premier’s Cup graduates in Brisbane.

The Premier’s Cup is one of the feature acts on the Eagle Farm card in late May with racing at the meeting headlined by the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) for Stradbroke Handicap hopes, the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes for two-year-olds heading towards the JJ Atkins and now the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) following a change to the carnival line-up in 2021.

The 2022 Premier’s Cup form was franked with the runner-up Sweet Thomas running a next-up third in the Brisbane Cup results.

In 2023 the Premier’s Cup third placegetter Kalapour went on to win the following year’s Group 1 Tancred Stakes in Sydney before a third in the 2024 Sydney Cup trifecta.

The 2024 Premier’s Cup produced that year’s next-up Brisbane Cup winner with the second-placed Alegron improving on his lead-up to claim the two-mile feature.

The 2025 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (Premier’s Cup) was held on Saturday May 31, 2025 at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Queensland Derby Day with the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott trained mudlark Campaldino ($7.50) relishing the wet conditions for an impressive 1.73 length win.

2025 Premier’s Cup Tips

Stay tuned for our insider Queen Elizabeth II Cup (Premier’s Cup) 2025 Tips on the Brisbane winter showdown.

  • To Win: #3 Immediacy ($3.40 at time of publish)

Have gone over the field seeking value but finding it impossible to tip against the favourite IMMEDIACY (1) here despite the 59.5kg. Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young’s airborne Tarzino four-year-old chases a hat-trick following back-to-back 2000m Melbourne wins in the lead-up. Two back he won at Mornington by 1.5 lengths with 56kg before saluting last time out in a BM100 at Caulfield with 57.5kg off an on-speed run. Up in weight and distance now but far from a superior field of rivals. Has had three goes at the mile and a half without a run in the money so stretching to the 2400m is a bit of a query. He’ll get every chance however from the inside alley with master hoop James McDonald booked for the ride. Full of confidence and punters should be too.

2025 Premier’s Cup Field

Premier’s Cup History

The Premier’s Cup is a relatively new race, with its inauguration occurring as recently as 2006. Coalesce was the first winner of the Premier’s Cup, and the trophy has since been handed to similarly solid performers.

The Premier’s Cup is often used by trainers as a preparation race for the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m), held on Stradbroke Handicap Day at Eagle Farm.

Due to its relatively short history, the Premier’s Cup has not developed the kind of following or deep tradition as other races. However, in its short life, the Premier’s Cup has obtained a reputation as an exciting staying race, with the result much more unpredictable than many other mid to long distance races.

The 2022 Premier’s Cup was marred by the tragic death of dual Melbourne Cup runner Steel Prince who was euthanised after suffering a suspected heart attack during the race.

Premier’s Cup results since 2006 are listed below.
