The weather in Melbourne today has morning rain easing by mid-afternoon meaning there is unlikely to be a change to the current Soft (6) Flemington track rating that was downgraded from Friday following overnight rainfall.
The meeting has attracted a number of horses withdrawn from the Sydney races due to a Heavy (10) track up at Royal Randwick today, and the Flemington racing action gets underway at 12:35pm (AEDT).
The first of the Group status features runs as Race 4 at 2:20pm (AEDT) with the fillies and mares facing off in the Group 3 s Tressady Stakes where all 11 final acceptors, led in betting at Ladbrokes.com.au by Sirileo Miss resuming, are still in the mix.
The Restricted $750,000 Inglis Sprint (1200m) is the next event and has drawn a class field of 13 three-year-olds with markets dominated by Expressway Stakes winner Over.
One of the highlights of the day runs as Race 6 at 3:40pm (AEDT) with Annabel Neasham’s returning Mackinnon Stakes champion Zaaki kicking off his campaign in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) after being scratched from the Canterbury Stakes in Sydney due to the wet track.
The marquee race on the program though is the Group 1 $1 million Australian Guineas (1600m), Flemington Race 7 scheduled for 4:20pm (AEDT).
The 2022 Australian Guineas field includes first emergency Maurice’s Medad coming in for the Chris Waller scratching, Coastwatch (18), who takes on Anamoe in the Randwick Guineas in the mud and Spring Champions Stakes winner Profondo in his Melbourne debut is narrow favourite.
